The Balkan Case Challenge (BCC) aims at opening up opportunities and new perspectives for excellent students from Albania, Austria, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Kosovo, Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Romania, Serbia and Slovenia through strengthening links between higher education and employment and by the provision of concrete job opportunities. In addition, the Balkan Case Challenge contributes to an increased awareness about the potentials of South-Eastern Europe/the Balkans – being an integrative part of a joint Europe.

Eligibility Criteria for Students

The Balkan Case Challenge (BCC) is composed of the following four measures:

    * Case Study Competitions
* Recruitment Events
* Alumni Network
* Accompanying measures at selected South-Eastern European universities

Why do we call it the Balkan Case Challenge?

After many and lengthy discussions with participants, jury members and other interested stakeholders in the BCC, we want to emphasize that we are very well aware of the fact that the notion “Balkan” stands for a geographical area that is not clearly defined. Wikepedia states that the countries of the Balkans combine “different countries whose common denominator is the fact that their territories of today were for centuries in the centre of a conflict within the powers of Austria, Russia and the Ottoman Empire” and adds further “that a more neutral terminology would be South-Eastern Europe”. read more

Eligibility Criteria for Students

BCC CountiresThe BCC is open for students who are enrolled at the universities and/or are citizens of: Albania, Austria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Kosovo, Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Romania, Serbia and Slovenia.

The BCC candidates need to be students in the fields of economics, law, political sciences (and related disciplines) and technical sciences from any state or private institution of higher education. They need to have excellent skills and an outstanding academic performance.

They need to be proficient users of the English language (see Level C1 according to the “Common European Framework of Reference” of the Council of Europe). Knowledge of German and of other foreign languages is an asset.

Students need to be under 28 years of age at the time of applying (for female applicants: the age limit is extended by 3 years per child) and have to complete their studies preferably within 1 year but within a maximum of 2 years from the moment of application.

Case Study Competitions

Excellent students from South-Eastern Europe and Austria are put to test in the following four academic disciplines at the BCC Case Study Competitions:

    * Law Moot Court
* Business Case Competition
* Model European Council
* ICT (Information and Communication Technology) Case Competition

High Potentials at the verge of their studies in the fields of law, economy, social sciences and technology compete at the BCC Sub-Competitions on national level. The best 140 participants of the Sub-Competitions are invited to show their talent at the international BCC in Vienna. More information about Case Study Competitions.

Recruitment Events

The recruitment events are an integrative part of the BCC Case Study Competitions providing a unique occasion for national and international companies and organizations in South-Eastern Europe to meet with the participants of the BCC, i.e. potential future employees from this region.

Therefore the national recruitment events at the Sub-Competitions and the International Job Fair South-Eastern Europe in Vienna bring together outstanding students and companies with focus on South-Eastern Europe. More information about Recruitment Events.

Alumni Network

It is the aim of the BCC Alumni Network to serve as a forum where former participants can get in contact with other alumni for professional, academic or social purposes.

An additional objective of the network is to keep its members informed about all the BCC activities and to involve them in ongoing and future BCC events as participants, lecturers, tutors, consultants, jury members etc. It also supports the recruitment of the members.

More information about the Alumni Network.

Accompanying measures at selected South-Eastern European universities

The case study method – developed as a learning tool at Harvard University in order to promote its use as a modern, practice-oriented method of learning – has always played a crucial role at the Balkan Case Challenge. Additionally, career and job related trainings have become an important component at the Balkan Case Challenge for the last years in order to fill the gap between Higher Education and employment. Accompanying measures will be introduced at selected South-Eastern European universities.

Therefore, the introduction of the case study method will bring interesting, real-world situations into the classroom and allow the application of theoretical knowledge and bridge the gap between theory and practice. BCC thus aims at introducing the case study method and career and job related trainings at selected universities in South-Eastern Europe and also at supporting their sustainability beyond the competition itself. More information about accompanying measures at selected South-Eastern European universities at Linking Universities & Economy.
